Guidelines for Authors

NOTE TO CONTRIBUTORS Papers should be submitted in .doc or .docx format via email: j.anc.top@gmail.com.

TEXT JAT publishes articles in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. The institution of the author should be indicated at the top of footnotes, preceded by an asterisk. Loan words from other languages, including Latin, should be italicized. References to figures should be in italics and parentheses (e.g., (Fig. 1)). Do not use bold type or underlining. Quotations in modern foreign languages should not be italicized. Short quotations should be included in the main text within quotation marks (“…” or «…» in French). Longer quotations should appear as separate blocks of text without italics or quotation marks.

CHAPTERS For long or complex papers, divide the text into chapters, each indicated by: progressive number, dot, title in SMALL CAPITALS. Example:
1. INTRODUCTION
Further subdivisions (paragraphs) should use progressive numbers, dots, and italic titles. Text should be left-aligned. Example:
Analysis of archaeological data.

FOOTNOTES Footnotes are indicated by superscript numbers. Endnotes are not accepted. Ancient authors in plain text, titles in italics (e.g., Plin., Nat. Hist., III, 52). Modern authors in SMALL CAPITALS followed by year and page (e.g., STEFAN 2020, pp. 334-335). Multiple authors separated by commas (e.g., FRANCESCHELLI, DALL’AGLIO, LAMOINE 2017, p. 440).

BIBLIOGRAPHY Bibliography at the end of the paper. Entries should be ordered alphabetically, then chronologically under each author. If multiple works by the same author in the same year, use “a,” “b,” etc. (e.g., UGGERI 1992a; UGGERI 1992b). Modern authors in SMALL CAPITALS, initials, year, title in italics (except Latin words), place of publication. Journals in plain text within quotation marks.

ILLUSTRATIONS AND CAPTIONS All illustrations will be printed in black and white; only selected illustrations in color. Number illustrations consecutively. Do not use separate numbers for line drawings and photos. Save figures as separate files (not embedded) at minimum 300dpi. Include scale on drawings, maps, and, if possible, aerial photographs. Captions should start with Figure, number, dash (e.g., Fig. 1 – Caption.) Specify the source in parentheses, using SMALL CAPITALS for the author of the text. Indicate if the image belongs to the author (e.g., Foto dell’Autore). Example: Fig. 14 – Coastal trenches. (Da UGGERI 1978). List all captions at the end of the article or in a separate file. Reproductions of maps and aerial photos from the Istituto Geografico Militare require authorization and payment for copyright.

SUMMARY Authors must provide a summary in English (max 2000 characters) and keywords (e.g., KEYWORDS: centuriation, ancient Sicily, earthquake, munera gladiatoria). Opinions expressed in articles are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the Editor’s views.
